Have you ever wondered where all of the Gigs of space disappeared too on your computer? I go to check the properties of one of my drives and I see that I am almost out of space on my hard drive! And I think to myself, “where did it go?!” I go searching, but I just can’t find out what is using all of my hard drive space. Let me show you how to find out so you can sleep peacefully tonight.
First, you will need to download a jewel of a program called WinDirStat.
Download WinDirStat from windirstat.info
After you have downloded WinDirStat, go ahead and install it. Don’t worry, the install is a piece of cake and works with Windows XP and Windows Vista.
The first time you run WinDirStat, you will see a selection window asking you what you want to scan.
After you have chosen what drive (or folder) you want to scan click OK to begin the scan. Scanning goodness will ensue and you will see the results of your scan after several minutes. (And yes, it can take a while to scan if the drive you are scanning is large.)
After scanning one of my laptops, here is what the scan showed me:
As you can see, my “Documents and Settings” folder is eating 42% of my hard drive space. If I wanted to get even more detailed I can expand the folder and see exactly is taking up the 42% and I can purge and archive files accordingly.
This utility has been an awesome lifesaver for me the short time I have been using. I hope you get some great info from
WinDirStat as well.
