Add a “Safely Remove Hardware” icon to your desktop

USB drives are an item of the present and they are used for many tasks.  We rely on them a lot, and sometimes too much.  What happens when you accidentally pull your USB drive out of the computer to early and all of your data on your drive goes bad?  It can really make you wish that you would have gone through the procedure to “safely remove your hardware”

I know the process to safely remove your hardware is annoying and takes way longer than simply pulling your USB drive out of the port.

Let’s put a shortcut on your desktop that might actually remind you to remove your USB drive the correct way next time.

First, right click anywhere on your desktop and hover over “New” and click the “Shortcut” option.

Next, copy and paste this text into the box where it’s asking for the location of the item.

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Click the “Next” button to continue.

Give your shortcut a good name (something like Safely Remove Hardware) and click the “Finish” button.

As you can see, your new icon doesn’t look very pretty.  Right click on your new icon and click on the “Properties” option.

When the properties window opens, click on the “Shortcut” tab and click the “Change Icon” button.

In the text box of the change icon window, enter in the following text.

Choose your icon of choice and click the “OK” button.

Here’s what my new icon looks like

Remember to use your icon to remove your USB drives!!!
